A new resource offering guidance to employers on disability, employment and discrimination is now available.

The practice guideline is produced for South Australian employers to encourage and assist them to employ people with disability, and to better understand anti-discrimination laws.

The guideline has been developed in consultation with JFA Purple Orange and Business SA, and is the first guideline issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Equal Opportunity since legislative changes were made in 2017 enabling practice guidelines to be published.

Disability discrimination continues to the leading source of complaint to the Office of the Commissioner for Equal Opportunity, making up 21 per cent of accepted complaints in 2019-20.

Of these, over a quarter related to employment.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare the unemployment rate of working-age people with disability is twice that of those without disability.
